Welcome to the winners of this years 2024 London Art College Art Competition! The winner is student Clare Roberts and the runner up is Gergana Stoyanova. Congratulations to both students, a very well deserved win!
We have added both pieces of artwork below, along with some text written by the students. We are thrilled and delighted for both students and hope everyone enjoys reading about their artwork in more detail.
Winner – Clare Roberts
This painting stems from a fascination I have with historic images of working people. I have been sketching images of fisherman in particular for a few years now and have since tried my luck with watercolour. I had spent a lot of time on the finer points in the early days and everything looked overdone, so I was determined to free up my style. This painting is a result of that.
I attempted to capture the feelings and character of the subject, hopefully creating a story. I tried to keep brush strokes minimal and used a light sketch before adding paint. I hadn’t planned the colour pallet, as the original photograph was in black and white, so I just went with flow and tried to keep it authentic. I am so pleased that the old sea dog still has a twinkle in his eye.
Runner Up – Gergana Stoyanova
The work is one of the first works in my portfolio I started this year to get into book illustration. I’ve always imagined a mice families living their tiny secret life in cosy places in libraries. In Bulgaria we have a saying “book mouse” or “книжен плъх” that we use equivalent to the “book worm” saying in English so I decided to play with words a little bit and create an illustration out of it.
