This past weekend, we asked our students to take on the theme of birds in our latest Weekend Art Challenge, and the results have been nothing short of exceptional!
Students have used a wide range of mediums, watercolour being a popular one, capturing the lightness and the beauty of soft fluffy feathers. We also have a few detailed pencil sketches showcasing intricate plumage, and we even have some striking digital art pieces that have brought birds to life with a modern edge.
We couldn’t be prouder of everyone who participated, and we encourage you to view all the pieces below that our students submitted for our challenge.

I had a little go at a bird sketch painting for the weekend art challenge Lucy Mae SHere’s a group of pencil studies of the house sparrow. I love to watch them hoping about my garden! Catherine TOzlem E“Two Birds Chatting” ArianaThis is a painting of a happy memory, made using pencil and watercolour. When my son was little, we were out walking and he saw a sparrow and said “Look! A peacock!!” It still makes me smile today!! Catherine TRobin with procreate! Ni NiEmma MEagle Face – Castle coloured pencils. Judith F.TOwl with fine liner pens Ni Ni(4) This is another image that I have copied from the artist Jake Winkler. A tawny owl in flight. I do like the expanse of wings and colours/patterns that are identified. I quickly sketched in pencil first and then I added watercolour, with speckles of splashed paint, Jake’s style. I like to attempt a different style of painting occasionally. Lynda SI was lucky to see the artist “Jake Winkler” last year and I decided to copy one of his ‘flamingo birds’ paintings. I sketched it first with pencil and then added pink, salmon and blue/grey shading with watercolour paints. I like the stance and irregular order in height of the flamingoes….and their reflections in the river. I hadn’t quite planned on the blurred effect of the legs in water, but it seems to work. Again, it’s best seen from a distance. Lynda SLast year I painted a scene from Mudeford bay, onto canvas, using tubes of watercolour paint. I even added some silver paint and glimmers of blue glitter paint (which were my children’s from many years ago!) It was taken from a video image of several wading birds, dipping their beaks into the muddy water. In addition, I added bright yellow onto the wings and splattered yellow spots of paint here and there. Finally, I wanted a ‘wet look’ and encouraged drips of watery paint to drip down the canvas. This is the largest painting that I’ve done to date and it’s best seen from a distance. Lynda SI wanted to sketch a black bird, perched on a branch. I used a simple black/brown watercolour paint for it’s body and branch on standard watercolour paper. I then I really enjoyed adding more finer detail using my black fine liner for the feathers and holly leaves. Lynda S Anne-Marie WAnne-Marie WAnne-Marie W
