For years I’ve wanted to improve my drawing and painting confidence. I mostly painted. My fear of the blank canvass and that voice in my head telling me I couldn’t draw, pushed me towards copying rather than drawing and focusing on colour rather than composition.
When we all realised the pandemic was not going to be over quickly, I decided to set myself a goal to have some drawing and painting instruction with genuine, professional feedback; there is only so much store you can put in family and friends’ comments. I wanted to start with the basics, have the opportunity to try different materials and explore styles as well as understand more about composition. I was really impressed with student’s work shown on the LAC website and the Drawing and Painting Course looked tailor-made for me. I enrolled and received a great welcome from Paul Weaver, my tutor. Paul has been so supportive; encouraging me to try new techniques, providing really helpful feedback and pointing me towards research tools to broaden my drawing and painting knowledge.
I’ve loved working through this course. Where am I now? A blank piece of paper is the start of an adventure and not something to be feared, taking time at the beginning to test materials and composition rewards me with greater freedom and confidence to create the piece I want and I now know how much pleasure and power there is in a simple stick of charcoal! I highly recommend this course to anyone. You will be guided thoughtfully, always encouraged and learn so much more than you expected.
Tracey worked very hard and her drawing and understanding of tone improved dramatically as she progress through the syllabus which was great to see.
