Farewell to Maggy Roberts – Happy Retirement!

After many years of dedicated teaching for us here at the London Art College, Maggy Roberts is retiring from her role as tutor for the Illustrating Children’s Books Diploma course. Maggy has been a valued part of the college, guiding and inspiring our students with her expertise and passion for children’s illustration. Her students have greatly benefited from her teaching and guidance and she will be truly missed.

We would like to thank Maggy for her hard work and commitment and wish her all the best in her retirement. We hope she enjoys spending more time painting and pursuing her own creative projects.

Moving forward, we are pleased to announce that Paul Weaver will be taking over as the new tutor for the Illustrating Children’s Books Diploma course. Paul brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role and looks forward to supporting students in their illustration journey.

Additionally, John Byrne will be leading the Follow-On Course, helping students continue to develop their skills and progress in their careers.

We are excited for the future of both courses and look forward to seeing the fantastic artwork our students will create under the guidance of Paul and John.

Wishing Maggy a very happy retirement, and a warm welcome to our tutors on these courses.

Paul Weaver

Paul Weaver began his creative career in the Graphic Design and Illustration industry, studying at Brunel College in Bristol and then going on to work for several leading design and publishing consultancies for 25 years.

He has produced children’s book illustrations for Oxford University Press and Heinemann Books, as well as creating numerous characters and illustrations for the packaging of various children’s products.

John Byrne

While John is well-known for his success as a cartoonist and teaches the LAC cartoon course, his experience extends far beyond that. He has worked in publishing for over 30 years as a writer and illustrator, having written and illustrated educational books for Macmillan, books on health care for Unicef and The Prince’s Trust, and and written for several very successful children’s TV producers ranging from Disney to the Jim Henson Company, all in a range of different styles.

In addition to this, John has acted as an agent and writing coach, guiding successful authors in refining and packaging their work for the children’s publishing market. He is excited to bring his skills and experience to the Illustrating Children’s Books – Follow-On course and is committed to supporting you and your fellow students in reaching your publishing goals.

  1. I wanted to add my good wishes to Maggy, with huge admiration for all she has done over the years. It’s an honour to take over the Follow On Illustration Course, and-despite such big shoes to fill-I’m very much looking forward to working with our talented Children’s Illustration students to help make that leap into print.
