London Art College student Kirsty Griffin is studying our Pet Portraits Diploma Course and has reached set two assignments. Tutor Heather Jolliffe has been thrilled with Kirsty’s progress so far. Here are two images from the second set of assignments. They show the reference photo on the left and Kirsty’s artwork on the right. Kirsty said…
My submission was done in pastel. I chose this medium as I wanted to challenge myself as this is the second time I have used pastels… I normally use pencil so this was a pleasant surprise on how free and expressive I could be with a pastel medium – I feel it has captured the dog very well and gives a subtle and relaxed expressive drawing.

I really enjoyed seeing the pastel drawing of the cats eyes, so convincing and with more life than perhaps the original photo Kirsty worked from. As for the dog’s head, just a clear and bold use of the pastel medium.
We hope to see more of Kirsty’s artwork in the coming weeks and month and wish her all the best with her experimenting of the different mediums.
