I have always had an interest in drawing and painting and I very much enjoy pottering around art galleries in my spare time. I stopped drawing as work and family took over my time but it is something I have returned to now I have retired.
It took me quite a while to pluck up the courage to sign up to the Drawing and Painting Diploma Course – but I’m very pleased that I did in the end! I wanted to build my confidence and develop new skills. The course covered a range of aspects of drawing and painting with lots of opportunities to try out new techniques and painting styles. I had never used graphite powder (that was messy!) or pen and ink before and it was fun to see what could be achieved in these media.
The course was quite flexible and allowed me to explore the things I found interesting. I was surprised to find that I began to enjoy watercolour, a medium I’d always found difficult and unpredictable. I began to feel that it’s unpredictability was what made it exciting to explore – and the outcomes were often surprising.
Later in the course I was challenged by the task of producing two pieces of work in different styles. It took a while to decide how to approach this but I found myself enjoying researching into a variety of artistic styles and using that as a basis for my own work. I would never have tried these styles without the prompt of the course and I was pleased with the results. I have discovered you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the painting process and to explore new ideas.
Having a personal tutor with such a lot of experience and skill was invaluable. Paul gave very positive feedback and lots of advice and tips. It was helpful to be able to ask questions and discuss my difficulties as the course progressed.
If you are considering this course I would very much encourage you to go ahead. You will find it both challenging and rewarding and you may well be surprised at what you can achieve. Happy painting.
