The Self Portrait….
The first time I used chalk pastels was in the Beginners Drawing course, and I loved the texture and how you could layer the colours, so was excited that there was a course dedicated to drawing with pastels. The exercises were a lot of fun and there’s lots of great tips of techniques and things to try.
This portrait was the final exercise for the Pastels Certificate Course. I misread the instructions, so had already started by the time I realised it was to be greys. But the grey on grey turned out to be an interesting effect, and I used a few pops of colour for the eyes and hair to make that more pronounced. I love with pastels how you can choose whether to put in a lot of detail or just give hints.
I also love how there’s lots more to explore, and I appreciate how the tutors of the London Art College courses encourage you to explore different media and techniques and ideas – it’s brought me so much joy to experiment and keep learning.
Other work I created on the course…
