The Covid pandemic disrupted lives for people all over the world, however for some it presented an opportunity for creative exploration. Nelli Begg, a London Art College student, is one such person. Prior to lockdown, she had never picked up a paintbrush, but now she is creating beautiful watercolour paintings and illustrations that are absolutely amazing. Here we look at one of her watercolours, inspired by the classic novel, Jane Eyre.
Assignment 5 of the Watercolour Diploma Course
I was very excited about this assignment. I loved the idea of telling a story through a painting. I have based this painting on one of my favourite books, Jane Eyre. It is a famous story about a poor orphaned girl, who becomes a governess and falls in love with the master of the house, who unfortunately, is married to a mad woman. In Victorian times, the divorce is impossible and Jane has to make a choice.
After discovering the truth, Jane spends a sleepless night and as the dawn draws near, she decides to flee. She walks away with a broken heart, weeping and delirious, not noticing where she is going… It is foggy and grey, I wanted to show her feelings through the surroundings.
