When I was younger, I used to consider drawing and painting a big part of who I was, part of my identity. As time went by, having a family and working full time as a teacher, I gradually lost touch with this part of myself but always felt there was a piece missing.
Somehow I came across London Art College on the Internet and decided to give the Drawing and Painting course a try. Through this course I have not only “relearned” what I used to know, but also been encouraged to try new materials and techniques which I would not otherwise have given a thought. It has helped me extend my horizons greatly.
My tutor Paul Weaver has patiently taught me not to rely too heavily on outline but to use graphite, charcoal and ink to create shades and depth in a drawing. He also encouraged me to try water-based oil colour, this was new to me but I now really enjoy working with this material. I learned to let go of perfection by drawing a self portrait using a broken stick, dipped in black ink!
All in all, I would highly recommend this course to anyone who could do with an artistic push in the right direction. Through all the encouragement, advice and techniques I have learned, I am now creating art again and I feel a new security in myself as an artist.
