I am another lockdown-baby-artist…still feel guilty that I had such a lovely time in lockdown, but also feel so privileged to have had a chance to enrol on the Drawing and Painting Diploma Course and learn new skills and improve old ones.
My last foray into art education was when I did my art O-level (and the name gives an indication of how long ago that was!!), with only a dabbling in calligraphy and a vast quantity of doodling since. I had only really drawn with graphite before, and I found the course really useful for improving my drawing skills…particularly teaching me about value, but also perspective, composition and depth. I was also encouraged to try drawing in charcoal which I find I love!
I then moved on to painting, in watercolours to begin with, and found this incredibly challenging with many, many, many attempts on each assignment. I did feel I made some progress in watercolour though, just in time to move on to acrylics, leading to a whole new set of challenges. Since I finished the course I have even been dabbling in oils, which I never would have had the confidence to do beforehand.
I have to say, the very best bit of the course for me was the amazing feedback I got for each assignment. Paul has been so helpful, really encouraging and understanding, yet not afraid to give much-appreciated constructive criticism when needed. Such a gem of a tutor! Thank you Paul and thank you to everyone at the London Art College for opening up such an exciting world for me!
