I loved doing the Children’s Illustration Follow on course, it gave me an opportunity to learn about creating storyboards and dummy books, as well as giving me time to experiment with many different mediums.
Before I started the courses, I had not properly used dip pens and pen/ink. I chose to do the black and white illustration of the Owl for the last submission to challenge me, because I am more comfortable using colour. I found a way of using ink and collage which works for me.
After completing the course I now feel far more confident in seeing an illustration through to the end!
The assignments I feel have worked well and are my favourite, have been the 3 double page spreads for my story of a lonely boy crab and the 3 baby board farm books. The illustrator Eric Carle has really inspired me and I have found that I love to use cut out tracing paper combined with painterly textures. Also Matisse’s use of colour and shapes inspired my work for the ladybird and the number illustration.
My plans now, are to set up a website with the work I have done on the course and find a suitable agent or publisher. I am also interested in selling my work on Etsy.
Maggy has been amazing with helpful feedback and positive comments. I want to thank her for helping me on my journey as a children’s book illustrator.
