Pet Portrait Diploma Student Brian Pearson has created two lovely paintings of dogs for one of his assignments for the pet portrait course. We have added some text that Brian sent to his tutor Gayle so that our students and readers can find out more about each piece and which mediums he used. Well done Brian on creating two wonderful paintings, neither mediums are easy!
Puppy. This is from my own reference image of a friend’s puppy which I took some time ago. I did this in acrylic on Seawhite Acrylic 360g paper. I found this quite challenging trying to build up the layers and get enough fine detail into the head of the puppy. Having done this in acrylic, I think it is a medium that I probably need to practice more with as it doesn’t give me the fine detail that I can achieve with a very sharp coloured pencil. I have left the painting a few times and come back to it a day or two later to try and improve on what I have produced. I perhaps should have picked another reference that didn’t have quite so many colour variations in the fur as this one.
The Labrador with background. This I did to a relatively large size of 24cm x 30cm using a mix of pastel pencils and pastel sticks on Pastelmat 360g paper. I found the paper quite rough to use and it took a lot of pigment. I don’t think that I have overworked the pastel in this instance and I have achieved a little more texture and detail. I did, however, find it less forgiving than my coloured pencil work.
