With the master work I tried to take on board the brief and create an image which was vibrant and inviting, that had a fun almost carnival atmosphere. Even thought the tortoises shell is centre stage, the birds feathers provide a vibrant frame for it.
When I read the brief I couldn’t get the painter Henri Rousseau out of my head, so the blocky leaf colour is a nod to that.
My initial intention was to return to each bird and outline the feathers so they were consistent with the foliage, however I found that I actually liked the extra lightness the lack of an outline gave to the birds and decided to leave them this way.
I think it just remains for me to say a huge thank you, I have really enjoyed the course and am proud of many of the illustrations I have produced throughout. The direction and sense of purpose has been immensely helpful and I am very excited about continuing on my illustration journey.
