Congratulations to Jan Graham who’s Winter Berries painting was chosen for this years Association of Distance Learning Colleges (ADLC) Christmas card. We set students the challenge of coming up with festive themed artwork so that ADLC could choose their favourite. You can see all of the entries on our blog here – Festive Challenge. We are thrilled to show Jan’s painting in detail below and hope that you enjoy reading about the artwork too. Well done to Jan and we are looking forward to seeing more of Jan’s artwork here on the blog shortly!!
I choose this image as the brief stipulated that the image should be non religious. Currently I am participating in the Coloured Pencil Botanical Art Course studying with Ida Mitrani who has been very helpful and supportive during the course. Just recently we incorporated ink into our pencil images. It was a mixed medium that I feel works very well and helped depict the edges of the holly.

The colours of red and green always speak of the Winter season and so very few other colours were needed. Although the black ink can be harsh, when applied in a stippling manor I think it enhances the design.
The image was worked on Strathmore smooth paper using polychromo pencils and took 10 hours to produce.
